Wellington build a garage: common questions
- Do I need consent for a single garage in NZ?
- If it's detached, single-storey, under 30 m², and meets the Schedule 1 conditions (not for habitation, distance from boundary), it can be exempt. Anything larger or attached usually needs consent.
- How much does a steel kitset garage cost?
- Shell-only kitset (delivered to site) is typically $8-18k for a single, $15-30k for a double. Add concrete floor, electrics, doors and installation — total installed is closer to the budget range above.
- Can I convert a garage into a sleepout without consent?
- Usually no — converting from non-habitable to habitable is a change of use under the Building Act and triggers consent. Insulation, ventilation, and means of escape rules all apply.
