Questions to ask before you sign
- What treatment level on the posts? H4 minimum for in-ground.
- Are posts concrete-set or just rammed earth?
- Are gates included?
- If this is a boundary fence, has the neighbour agreed under the Fencing Act?
Auckland build a fence: common questions
- Who pays for a boundary fence in NZ?
- Under the Fencing Act 1978, adjoining neighbours generally split the cost 50-50 for an 'adequate' fence. Higher specs are at the requesting neighbour's cost. Formal notice procedures apply if there's disagreement.
- How tall can a fence be without consent?
- Under 2.5m is exempt under Schedule 1 of the Building Act. Heights between 1m and 2.5m may still be limited by your district plan, especially in front yards.
- How long does a treated pine fence last in NZ?
- Properly installed H4 posts in concrete with H3.2 rails: 15-25 years. Cheaper installs (no concrete, no treatment) can fail in 8-12 years.
