What does NZ Certified Builders membership mean?

Updated May 2026

Short answer

New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) is a trade association similar to Registered Master Builders, but with a stronger trade-qualification emphasis (every member has to hold a trade qualification, not just experience). NZCB members can offer the Halo 10-Year Residential Guarantee. It's another paid private membership, not a government licence.

Key facts

  • NZCB requires every member to hold a recognised trade qualification
  • Roughly 3,000 NZCB members vs 1,800 RMB members nationally
  • Halo Guarantee — NZCB's version of the Master Build product
  • Independent of LBP; you need LBP for the law and NZCB for the quality signal
  • Separate complaints / dispute process for members

What sets NZCB apart from RMB

The qualification bar. NZCB requires every member to hold an NZ trade qualification (or equivalent). RMB historically accepted experience in lieu of formal qualifications. Both have tightened over time, but the lineage shows.

Some NZ builders join both. Many pick one based on local network — RMB has more presence in some regions, NZCB in others.

Halo vs Master Build

Halo is underwritten by Stamford Insurance and offers similar four-limb cover: deposit, non-completion, defects, structural. Sub-limits and exclusions are similar but not identical — read the schedule for your specific policy.

Like RMB's guarantee, Halo cover has to be set up at contract signing. You can't bolt it on after.

Before you hire

Knowing the rules is half the job. The other half is knowing who you're hiring. Check any NZ builder against the public record: company status, licensing and insolvency notices, from the official NZ sources.
